Hemp: The Use Of Hemp In Medicine

The healing properties of Hemp is an extremely topical and controversial topic. We present which diseases and conditions can be treated with medical marijuana.

Hemp: The healing properties of cannabis

In medicine, cannabis and seeds are used, inter alia, in the form of dry smoke (vaporization, e.g. in the treatment of lung cancer or asthma) – Bedrobinol , Bedrocan ,  Bedica  , dried tea (containing CBD), Sativex tablets – for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, capsules – Marinol for the treatment of anorexia and weight loss in patients patients with AIDS and nausea and vomiting accompanying chemotherapy, as well as oils, pastes and ointments containing THC and / or CBD.

These drugs are just a few of the ever-growing list of cannabis medications, all of them prescription drugs. You can also buy CBD-only pastes, ointments and oils in over-the-counter stores.

The oil containing CBD and / or THC is used in medicine as a drug or excipient in terminal states to relieve pain, stimulate the appetite or as a means of falling asleep.

Most often, however, we find Hemp is used in cancer treatment therapies (stimulating immunity, neutralizing cancer cells, stimulating appetite, inducing drowsiness, antidepressant properties), neurodegenerative (reducing spasticity, better sleep, greater appetite, antidepressant properties) in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy , glaucoma (reducing pressure in the eye) or asthma (can block muscle contractions caused by an acetylcholine molecule).

CBD is a broad-spectrum, naturally occurring cannabinol found in cannabis . It has no side effects, so it can be safely used in high doses, according to tests up to 600mg / day. Some of the issues raised in recent research include chronic pain and inflammation, schizophrenia, migraines, rheumatism, cramps and epilepsy, and cancer.

The use of hemp in medicine

Due to its medicinal properties , Hemp is used in medicine:

  • antiemetic – helps to fight nausea and reduce the gag reflex;
  • antipsychotic – relieves symptoms of mental illnesses;
  • anti-inflammatory – it is helpful in fighting all kinds of inflammatory diseases;
  • antioxidant – important in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases;
  • anti-cancer – has a proven effect in fighting tumors and cancer cells;
  • increases the effect of THC while eliminating its side effects
  • antidepressants – helpful in combating depression and anxiety;
  • anticonvulsants – which helps to inhibit or reduce the activity of seizures.

THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main component of marijuana (from about 8% to 20% of cannabinoids), which is found in all parts of the marijuana plant, and its highest concentration is in the inflorescences of female plants.

It is also the most psychoactive component of Hemp and is responsible for many of the medicinal properties of the plant and is responsible for the narcotic effect, i.e. feeling high.

Hemp for your health

It is practically insoluble in water, dissolves in organic solvents, e.g. alcohol and fats. THC itself shows some side effects even at low doses, such as 10 mg / day, which unfortunately limits the therapeutic possibilities .

The use of THC in medicine:

  • relieves pain symptoms – research has shown that THC activates pathways in the central nervous system that block the pain signals sent to the brain, helpful in neuropathic pain;
  • antiemetic – effectively helps to fight nausea and reduce the gag reflex;
  • stimulates the appetite – which is extremely effective in people with anorexia;
  • helps to heal and relieve symptoms of asthma;
  • helps in the treatment of glaucoma by reducing the pressure in the eyeball in patients;
  • works to make you sleepy;
  • provides relaxation of physical or mental tension.

Based on research by scientists from Leiden University, it has been shown that the content of the most important cannabinoids THC and CBD is not a criterion for finding differences between indica and sativa strains. In both variants, the THC concentrations are nowadays essentially high and the CBD concentrations very low.

This allowed us to conclude that subjective differences between sativa and indica strains may be based on other CBG and CBC cannabinoids as well as differences in the composition of terpenes (essential oils).

A 2016 study found that cannabis use can be helpful in treating alcohol and opioid addiction .

Regular Marijuana: What Is Medicinal Marijuana?

Regular Marijuana: Medicinal marijuana is actually regular marijuana used to treat diseases or minimize their symptoms. The difference between medical marijuana and marijuana, which can be bought on the street, is that medicinal marijuana has appropriately selected amounts of active cannabinoid substances, does not contain admixtures, fertilizers, and poisonous substances – it is created in sterile conditions in a laboratory.

Although the use of medical regular marijuana in Portugal has been legal since February this year, discussions about the effects of the drug are still controversial. Even with a study published in the American journal “American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse” indicating that adolescents use less marijuana after its legalization, there are still those who radically resist the regulation.

Regular Marijuana

Therapeutic use often occurs in the absence of the criteria that give cannabis medicinal quality. It is called Medical Grade Cannabis that has quality control, whose production is standardized and that meets international standards for herbal medicines. The medicinal use of cannabis refers above all to the purpose we give it and not to its quality.

Medicinal marijuana has been legal in Poland since November 1, 2017, but only after more than a year after legalization it was sent to pharmacies.

A prescription for medicinal marijuana can be written by any doctor, but currently few doctors in Poland have experience in treating marijuana.

Medicinal marijuana in Poland will be sold as a prescription drug. This means that the pharmacist will prepare the preparation based on the prescription provided by the doctor.

Medical marijuana currently costs about PLN 65 per gram – it is estimated that a monthly treatment may cost from PLN 1 to 2 thousand. PLN. The current price may be lower when it comes to some country pharmacies (currently it is imported from Canada).

Spectrum Cannabis, the only company with approval from the Medicinal Registration Office, announces several times greater deliveries and the option of registering three other types of cannabis with different THC and CBD compositions.

Regular Marijuana For Health

Marijuana inhibits many reactions in the body – Regular Marijuana has been shown to relieve receptor pain not associated with cancer and neuropathic pain. Its analgesic effect is compared to that of drugs from the 2nd level of the World Health Organization’s analgesic ladder, which include substances such as codeine and tramadol.

Thanks to medicinal regular marijuana, it is possible to limit the administration of opioids in high doses. In the case of neuropathic pain, medicinal marijuana is inferior to the most effective tricyclic antidepressants, but its effectiveness is compared to that of gabapentin.

Medicinal regular marijuana can come in a variety of forms including tablets and suppositories (for adults); essential oil (for younger patients).

The most effective in the treatment is a vaporizer, i.e. a device that heats the herbs to a high temperature (approx. 200 degrees C) and thus gives the option of inhalation.

  • multiple sclerosis;
  • drug-resistant epilepsy;
  • chronic neuropathic pain;
  • cancer pain;
  • glaucoma ;
  • Parkinson’s disease ;
  • Alzheimer’s disease;
  • anorexia;
  • AIDS;
  • hepatitis C;
  • inflammatory bowel diseases;
  • Crohn’s disease;
  • post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • Tourette’s syndrome.

Marijuana Healing Properties: What Are The Healing Properties Of The Marijuana?

Marijuana Healing Properties: You’ve heard a lot recently about the healing properties of marijuana. Under controlled conditions, cannabinoids (THC or CBD) contained in marijuana can work as pain relievers, anti-inflammatory agents or even appetite stimulants. This is not the end of the list – cannabis is used as an anti-cancer and anticonvulsant agent.

The mere fact that this drug has healing properties does not mean that it can be used as a drug substitute. It is worth remembering that smoking marijuana carries a number of side effects, one of the most dangerous of which is strong addiction (both psychologically and physically) to this drug. This is why it is so important to use THC as a medicine under the supervision and approval of a doctor.

Marijuana Healing Properties: Treatment Of Depression And Anorexia

In countries where the use of medical marijuana healing properties is legal, doctors often prescribe the drug to people suffering from mild depression. Cannabinoid therapy is usually combined with other activities – for example, behavioral therapy or light therapy. Various studies show that the stimulating effects of cannabis can have a positive effect on treatment.

How can THC affect the treatment of anorexia? It is worth noting that the disturbed economy of the endocannabinoid system has a huge impact on the condition of the entire body, including the feeling of hunger.

The researchers therefore concluded that the use of marijuana healing properties, which after all affects this part of the brain, could help treat this condition. So far (as of 2018), there are no studies confirming the effectiveness of cannabis in combating this ailment.

Marijuana Healing Properties: Treatment of tumors

Some time ago, it was quite popular to say that marijuana is an effective and brilliant cancer medicine. How much truth is there? In fact, there have been isolated (!) Cases in history where the use of cannabinoids has caused the destruction of cancer cells. However, there is no hard evidence that marijuana can actually cure cancer.

The use of marijuana can significantly alleviate the difficulties experienced by people who are struggling with cancer. It has been proven that marijuana enables the reduction of chronic pain that can arise in oncological diseases.

In addition, the use of cannabis also has an anti-inflammatory effect, but it also significantly reduces the risk of nausea in people receiving chemotherapy.

Treatment of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular problems

Where did the idea that marijuana healing properties could be effective in the treatment of atherosclerosis come from? A few years ago, a study was conducted in which mice with atherosclerosis were administered cannabinoids.

It has been noticed that their use significantly reduces the progression of the disease, thanks to their influence on the immune system.

In addition to the mice experiment described above, research into the positive effects of marijuana healing properties on the treatment of atherosclerosis is still at a very early stage of development.

There is no clear evidence of a link between marijuana healing properties use and actual cure. Therefore, it is difficult to consider cannabis and products based on it as a reliable agent in the treatment of atherosclerosis and various cardiovascular ailments.

Treatment of multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and diabetes

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the diseases of the nervous system for which no effective drug has yet been invented. This condition, which leads to damage to nerve cells in the brain, spinal cord or optic nerve, is associated with many symptoms that affect the daily functioning of the patient – limb numbness, paresis, or even complete paralysis or loss of vision.

The use of such agents is to facilitate everyday existence in the presence of these symptoms. Anyway, drugs based on marijuana healing properties are registered in Poland as products for the treatment of muscle spasticity in MS.

It is also worth mentioning the beneficial role of marijuana healing properties in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. Researchers (Davinsky et al.) Noted that the use of marijuana has a positive effect on the reduction of epileptic symptoms – this was observed in over 50% of respondents.

It is impossible not to mention the positive effect of marijuana healing properties on people with diabetes. Administering the drug can relieve pain in the nervous system that accompanies the disease.

Medical Marijuana Treatment: What Diseases Is Medical Marijuana Treated For?

Medical Marijuana Treatment: Medical marijuana is still a taboo subject that is highly controversial. Doubts most often arise from ignorance. It is worth noting, however, that the healing properties of marijuana have been confirmed in many scientific studies, and the list of diseases treated with medical marijuana is very long.

Medical Marijuana Treatment: What Is Medical Marijuana?

There are two most important substances in the composition of marijuana, i.e. THC and CBD. Depending on their proportions, a given variety of marijuana will be good for our health or well-being. Medical marijuana is made from hemp, which contains high amounts of CBD.

More THC causes cannabis to make our body euphoric and intoxicated, while large amounts of CBD have a wide range of health-promoting properties and have no psychotic effects.

What Diseases Can Medical Marijuana Treatment With?

People used the healing properties of marijuana several thousand years ago, incl. in India and China. So it is not a modern discovery. In such distant times, people realized the invaluable properties of marijuana in the fight against insomnia, pain and gastrointestinal problems. Today, Medical Marijuana Treatment is recommended for:

  • chronic pain of various origins;
  • myasthenia gravis ;
  • epilepsy, when the patient does not respond to medications, the number of seizures can be reduced by up to 90% thanks to marijuana;
  • ADHD – problems with concentration;
  • Alzheimer’s disease – in this disease THC is effective, thanks to which the formation of amyloid plaques, which are responsible for the destruction of brain cells, slows down. When used regularly, medical marijuana treatment can significantly delay disease progression;
  • autism – medical marijuana helps autistic people to control aggression and anxiety;
  • alcoholism and other addictions;
  • glaucoma – used especially when other methods are not effective;

Medicinal Marijuana: Application In Herbal Medicine, Treatment Of Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis

Medicinal Marijuana: While some consider it a dangerous drug that negatively affects the work of the brain, others see its green leaves as an effective remedy for treating serious diseases.

Of course, we are talking about marijuana, which has not ceased to be controversial for years. Recently, the problem of the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes has returned to the language.

Medicinal Marijuana

1. Healing properties of marijuana

The healing properties of marijuana  have been known for hundreds of years. In ancient India and China, it was popular to use its flowers to treat skin lesions such as ulcers and burns.

The seeds, on the other hand, were found to be an excellent anti-inflammatory, laxative and deworming medicine. The oil produced from them was used as a conditioner to improve the condition of the hair.

But that’s not all. The resinous extract of this plant was the basis of an alcoholic drink that was supposed to relieve migraine headaches and at the same time was a natural sleep aid.

2. Medicinal marijuana and multiple sclerosis

Smoking marijuana is increasingly practiced by patients suffering from multiple sclerosis . The development of the disease leads to a significant limitation of motor skills, which is accompanied by severe pains, which in many cases cannot be relieved by traditional means. Medicinal marijuana comes in handy when it comes to reducing muscle stiffness .

Research into its actual effectiveness is still ongoing, but a drug based on cannabis has been developed in Canadaintended for patients struggling with MS. This type of therapy raises many doubts in the medical community.

Both doctors and scientists emphasize that the effects of long-term use of medicinal marijuana are not exactly known. Moreover, the safety of taking psychoactive substances by people whose cognitive functions are impaired as a result of multiple sclerosis is being questioned.

3. Marijuana and oncological diseases

Research by British scientists shows that marijuana may prove helpful in cancer treatment . Their tests show that taking marijuana in the form of inhalation, i.e. by smoking a joint will significantly reduce the severity of the vomiting-inducing nausea that is a side effect of chemotherapy.

Medicinal marijuana also helps to deal with other complications of this method of treatment – it significantly improves the reduced appetite, which in many cases turns into anorexia, which is dangerous to health, and also positively affects the patient’s well-being, significantly improving his mood.

Some believe that cannabinoids in cannabis can also cause the self-destruction of certain types of cancer cells. In the light of recent tests, medicinal marijuana is considered a substance that positively affects the condition of patients with glioblastoma – one of the most dangerous forms of brain tumor.

It turns out that after injecting active substances contained in medicinal marijuana directly into the neoplastic lesion, its blood supply is inhibited, which contributes to tumor death.

Use of Medicinal Marijuana

4. Medicinal marijuana and other diseases

From time to time, other interesting findings regarding the possibility of treating medical marijuana come to light. The article published in the journal Nature proves that THC may play an important role in the prevention of atherosclerosis. There are also studies on its therapeutic properties for some types of epilepsy .

According to American researchers, medicinal marijuana taken by diabetics reduces the risk of complications in the form of diabetic retinopathy , which can cause blindness.

Stimulating the appetite, which is one of the effects of taking medicinal marijuana, is also used in the treatment of people suffering from AIDS, who have dangerous appetite disorders.

The legalization of THC as a therapeutic agent currently has little chance of success in Poland. The main obstacle are the risks that may be caused by long-term use of this psychoactive drug, especially addiction.

According to specialists, in the future it may be possible to use cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes, which are produced in small amounts in our body. The advantage of this solution is that healthy cells are not negatively affected.
